Faiq Bolkiah: Meet the richest footballer in the world who was on the books at Arsenal and Chelsea

Wages in football have been spiraling out of control for many, many years.

We remember when £ 100,000 a week was an outrageous salary.

Now, however, your average premier league team player picks up six figures on a weekly basis.

Indeed, according to the last Forbes financial report, Cristiano Ronaldo picks up $ 125 million in 2021. That’s $ 70 million in salaries and an additional $ 55 million in endorsements.

After more than a decade at the top of the game, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Ronaldo is the richest footballer in the world.

But it is not.

And neither one nor the other Lionel messi.

Instead, the richest player in the world is a certain Faiq Bolkiah.

Well you might have heard of the name because Bolkiah has spent much of his youth career bouncing back at many Premier League clubs including Southampton, Chelsea, Reading and Arsenal.

But it was in Leicester that he signed his first professional contract in March 2016.

Last year he left the Foxes after failing in the first team and joined Portuguese club Maritimo.

He is also the captain of the Brunei national team, although he has only played six times for them.

“How is he the richest footballer in the world? We hear you ask.

Well, Bolkiah has a net worth of £ 20 billion. His uncle? The Sultan of Brunei.

In comparison, according to Goal, Cristiano Ronaldo is worth “only” 363 million pounds in comparison.

Faiq Bolkiah

Her father, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, is a member of the Brunei royal family and would have spent £ 10 billion in 15 years at the head of the Brunei Investment Agency.

It is claimed that he owned more than 2,000 cars at one time, including a fleet of Bentleys, Ferraris and Rolls-Royces.

When he celebrated his 50th birthday, he wanted to impress his 7-year-old son, Faiq. Therefore, he flew to Michael Jackson for a private concert for himself and his family, paying him £ 12.5million.

Despite the opportunity to enjoy a lavish lifestyle, Faiq just wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a footballer.

Quiz: can you name the footballer based on his Wikipedia page?

“I have been playing football for as long as I can remember, and from a young age I have always loved going on the pitch and having the ball at my feet.” Bolkiah revealed to FourFourTwo in 2017.

“My parents have always supported me to help me achieve my dreams as a footballer, and they trained me psychologically and physically hard throughout my childhood, so I have to say they are my role models.”

Now 23, Bolkiah has yet to play for the first team in his career, but is still not giving up on his dream.
