AtoB @ C delivers a series of hybrid ships with Chowgule – ShipInsight

Swedish company AtoB @ C Shipping – a subsidiary of Finnish owner ESL – will build a series of six new energy-efficient hybrid electric vessels at the Chowgule shipyard in India.

AtoB @ C says these new 90m Ice Class 1A ships will be the market leaders in terms of cargo capacity, technology and innovation. The total investment value of the six vessels is around 70 million euros. AtoB @ C Shipping has the possibility to extend the order with several ships.

Greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, per unit of cargo carried will decrease by almost 50% compared to existing ships, making ships the most efficient in the world in their class. The ships’ batteries, the electricity solution on shore and the hybrid electric use allow stopovers without emissions and noise. Ships can also arrive and leave the port on electricity only.

The new ships will be built at the Chowgule shipyard in India and will be delivered from the third quarter of 2023. The shipyard has a long history of building ships of similar size for several European customers.

The ship design work and full model tests were carried out in collaboration with Dutch naval architects SMB. The company has been closely involved in the design of the vessels and tailored them to customer needs. Particular attention has been paid to energy efficiency and the layout of loading spaces.

“We are very happy to be able to invest in new energy efficient vessels. Together with shipbuilder Chowgule and AtoB @ C Shipping, we will make shipping even more environmentally friendly, ”said Mikki Koskinen, Chairman of the Board of ESL.

“With this order, we are able to offer our customers more environmentally friendly transport and meet growing demand. This order will also guarantee us an ecological and modern capacity in the years to come, ”said Frida Rowland, business unit manager of AtoB @ C Shipping.
